Also called False Turkey-tail
Stereum ostrea displays zones of brown and reddish brown colors, underneath lacks a pore surface (smooth underside). Lives on the dead wood of hardwoods in dense overlapping clusters, common. Wikipedia says Stereum is the most representative genus of the newly-created family Stereaceae, in the Russulales order. Until recently, the genus was classified in the Corticiaceae family, of the Corticiales order. However it was given its own family as a result of the split-up of the Corticiales.
