Haliastur sphenurus (ACCIPITRIDAE) Whistling Kite


Medium-sized bird of prey, shaggy appearance. Light brown head and underbelly, dark sandy-brown wings pale on underside to to 145 cm. Found throughout Australia except Tasmania and Lives in woodlands, open country and particularly wetlands. Has a distinctive M-shaped pattern of pale feathers when viewed from underneath during flight. It is common around farmland anywhere where carrion (dead animals) can be found, also feeds on small mammals, birds, fish and insects
