We’ll meet near the green creek bridge for our first working bee of the year and fig planting. The invasive grasses and vines are thriving, so we are likely to focus on weeding, but we’ll also do some much needed infill planting.
If you’ve been walking in this area recently or following our Facebook feed, you’ll likely be saddened at the loss of the fig that stood at the green bridge (see header pic). Along with the majority of other trees, this was planted many years ago by Corbie Street residents and made the area extra lush and shaded. Jodi, our Habitat Brisbane officer has kindly sourced us two Moreton Bay figs (Ficus macrophylla) for planting on site. These are on our Regional Ecosystem 12.3.16 list (see image). Jodi notes that the fig trees (we lost another in the park closer to Corbie Street) may have failed from a fungal infection like Phellinus noxius, and that the weather may be ‘conducive to its proliferation at the moment.’ You can read more about this here. She further notes that if it is present in the soil, we don’t know if it might infect a replacement tree too, but we’ll give it a go!
