Dutchmans Pipe – The Killer from Brazil
Environmental education film about a Brazilian vine (Aristolochia elegans) introduced as a garden plant into South East Queensland, Australia. Dutchman’s Pipe has become a serious problem in dry rainforest where it lures a threatened butterfly (Richmond Birdwing) to lay eggs on its leaves. It is toxic to this species, and the caterpillar dies. Removal of this weed is one of the strategies of the Richmond Birdwing Recovery Network. The video discusses the extent of the problem, some native vines that should replace it, and methods of removal.
