DRAGON Austrogomphus amphiclitus (GOMPHIDAE) Pale Hunter

Damselflies & Dragonflies (Odonata)

Prefer good quality streams

The Pale Hunter Austrogomphus amphiclitus perches with the tail arched, usually on creekbank vegetation. It has a solid black wingmark, and can be separated from similar dragonflies by the central black stripe on the thorax which is only about half the depth of the thorax and does not enclose the spiracle. The eyes are a fairly bright green. These dragonflies and their close relatives prefer streams of good quality, often perching for lengthy periods, on stream-side vegetation or rock. Thought to be rare by Fraser (1960) but since found to be common in Brisbane’s western suburbs.

This photos shows more of the body. Dragonflies suffer no distress held by their wings, so long as they can’t flap them. Photo: Robert Whyte
