Unmistakeable colour pattern

Male Pseudagrion aureofrons have an unmistakeable colour pattern, gold bordered by black on both the face and the thorax. The rest of the male’s body is greenish blue, with a greenish dumbbell figure on the back of the eyes. Females are dull greenish grey, about the same size. This damsel is common in better quality, slow-flowing streams away from the coast. It hunts at speed low over the water and vigorously defends its territory, chasing away other Odonata almost regardless of size.

This photo shows the whole body, with tail light, quite a bright blue. The wings may have a pale tinge of smoky suffusion. Rests with wings lengthways. Photo: Robert Whyte
