Dacelo novaeguineae (ALCEDINIDAE) Laughing Kookaburra

Very recognisable in both plumage and voice. It is generally off-white below, faintly barred with dark brown, and brown on the back and wings. The tail is broadly barred with black. Conspicuous dark brown eye-stripe through the face. It is one of the larger members of the kingfisher family.

With meal

Photographed for the 2006 Photography Competition by Peter Wilkinson. “This kookaburra was ruthless in his efficiency to secure his next meal and do his bit to keep the mice population of Enoggera Creek under control.”
