Calliandra sp. (FABACEAE) Red Powder Puff

Weeds to Whack

Rambling shrub or small tree with branched pinnate, silky leaves and powder-puff-like balls of conspicuous dark crimson stamens (Csurhes and Edwards, 1998). Native of Bolivia, widely cultivated, propagates by seed. This specimen is possibly Calliandra ‘Rosea’; looks to be a hybrid of C. haematocephala and C. surinamensis as it has characters that are intermediate between the two species.

Flower Bud

Surveys in 2007 found three plants of various sizes growing in different locations along Enoggera Creek in The Gap. This is an emerging weed, newly naturalised.
