Aneilema acuminatum (COMMELINACEAE) Free Wanderer

Plants to Plant

Vigorous, weak-stemmed perennial herb with creeping or ascending stems to about 40 cm. Found in rainforest or in moist, shaded parts of open forest, north from the Bulli area in NSW.

Stems weak, branched, with leaves often crowded at ends of branches.

Leaves simple, alternate, to 8 cm by 2 cm, ovate-lanceolate, pointed at the tip and narrowed at the base. Blade discolourous, roughened, sheathing the stem at the base.

Flowers white, showy, to 1.5 cm across, with 3 flimsy petals and protruding stamens. Short-lived. Borne in panicles up to 15 cm long. Appear October to February.

Fruit an oblong, flattened capsule about 4 mm long.

Propagation from stem cuttings, which strike roots very readily.

A vigorous ground cover suitable for shaded, protected areas (requiring protection from hot sun and wind). Frost tender, but underground stems may enable it to regrow. Likes plenty of water, particularly during dry periods. Can be used as a basket plant if kept moist.

Related to the native Commelina diffusa Blue Commelina and the exotic Tradescantia fluminensis Wandering Dude.
