More than 50 SOWN members and supporters went back to Yoorala Street on Saturday 17 April to pay tribute to Vera Moffett who died in January.
With the assistance of The Gap Ward Office and Creek Ranger Andrew Wallace, Brisbane City Council installed a park seat facing Enoggera Creek in honour of Vera. The seat is located near the SOWN Environment Centre at 98 Yoorala Street The Gap.
Speaking at the event, SOWN Vice President Robert Whyte said Vera was an inspiration to all SOWN members.
"About 15 years ago Vera and her husband Fred started out rehabilitating a small section of the creek just opposite their house in Yoorala Street. Their friend Athol Brown and his wife Beverley joined in.
"Athol headed west towards the reservoir. Vera and Fred went east removing weeds and replanting right up to Corramulling Park.
"She wasn't loud or pushy, but Vera always got things done," Rob said.
In addition to managing the bushcare site at Yoorala Street, for many years Vera managed propagation at the SOWN Nursery in Paten Road The Gap.
Rob said the bush regeneration along Yoorala Street was considered one of Brisbane's most successful regeneration efforts.
Vera, Fred and Athol retired from bushcare 3 years ago. Unfortunately The Gap storms and floods in 2008 and 2009, destroyed a lot of the good work that had been done.
So as part of the tribute, SOWN members came from all over the Enoggera catchment and further afield to work on the site.
The area around the seat was weeded, mulched and planted. Then members spread out weeding and mulching about 100 metres of creek bank.
"It's great to see so many members joining in to work on this site. I know Vera would have appreciated our efforts," Rob said.
